The DogHouse

Date: October 2010

Project Address: Rooftop East Village Hotel, Liverpool St. Darlinghurst, Sydney

The Doghouse rooftop pop up bar was designed and built in just 24 days. The project saw Foolscap  collaborate with industrial designers Rob Dumaresq and Hugh Gurney, set builders Brad and Simon from Yippeekay and textiles artist Karolina York to create a prohibition era ‘speakeasy’ style bar that existed for only three weeks. The underlying concept encouraged patrons to engage with the themes of secrecy and concealment through the use of flip down tables, a hidden bar with bottles suspended behind shelves by a rope and pulley system and secret drinking vessels made from vintage teacups and pots.  As with all Foolscap projects, sustainable design features were key to the project, with hired furniture and props being employed, as well as modular joinery, constructed from environmentally sustainable plywood.  The bar represented the final stage of a competition called The Premise, which asked creatives from around the country to submit concepts for their dream bar.  Foolscap’s involvement ran from initial concept development, to design, materials sourcing and project management. The project was featured in several publications and online media.
